The Challenges of Church Roofing Maintenance

Church roofs differ from residential and commercial roofs in many ways, thanks to several unique features and components. Roofing and gutter replacement contractor Roofmasters Roofing and Sheet Metal Company, Inc. discusses the challenges of maintaining church roofs.

Unique Features

Traditional and modern churches all have a main structure where the congregation is gathered and several connecting rooms that can be a combination of offices, accommodations, or storage. Utilities such as one or more kitchens and bathrooms may also be in the same premise. In terms of roofing, this means church roofs often have sprawling roofs. Bell towers generally have exceptionally steep roofs with pointed peaks.

Churches are generally in the same size category as commercial buildings, except that, instead of flat roofs, churches have sloped ones. This means the roof area is much greater than the actual floor plan, making roof replacements costlier. Features such as parapets and concealed gutters are normally not found in homes or commercial buildings.

Maintenance Challenges

With unique features come unique maintenance challenges. Roofing inspections, for instance, are not recommended for untrained roofers because of the steep slopes and sheer height of the building. Older churches are being adapted for heating and air conditioning, which means attic insulation is now a factor. The choice of roofing materials is also important. Because churches are typically several stories high, roofing material such as metal (particularly copper) is desirable as it is wind-resistant and requires minimal maintenance.

Maintenance and repairs become even more complicated if the church is a historic property. You need to hire a roofing contractor who can source material that looks close to the original roof. At the same time, the new roof should be on par with modern roofing in terms of energy efficiency, wind resistance and maintenance requirements, all without sacrificing fidelity to the original design.
